FAQ
Questions.
What is a death doula?
A death doula is not a medical professional and not a religious minister. A death doula is a trained companion for the dying; someone who tends the space, holds the passage, and supports both the person dying and the people who love them. The role is ancient. It looks different for every person.
Do I have to be actively dying to work with you?
No. Planning ahead is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and for the people you love. Meghann supports advance care planning, death planning, and end-of-life conversations at any stage of life.
Do you work with people of all faiths and traditions?
Yes. This work is non-denominational. Whatever your tradition, your rites, or your understanding of what comes after, they belong in the room. Death Tender works within your framework, not despite it.
Can I die at home in BC?
Yes. It is completely legal to die at home in BC. You do not need to call an ambulance. When a death is expected, as in palliative or end-of-life care, there is no legal requirement to involve emergency services. Your family doctor or palliative care team can provide guidance on next steps after the death occurs.
Can we keep the body at home after death?
Yes. In BC, families can legally keep a body at home for up to 72 hours (3 days) with proper preparation. This can allow for meaningful time with your loved one, ceremony, and a natural farewell on your own terms. Meghann can help you understand your options and prepare.
What areas do you serve?
Meghann is based in Abbotsford, BC, and serves the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. Institutional and corrections work is available across BC. I am willing to travel outside these areas; however I would not recommend it as travel costs make it significantly more expensive for you.
How much does it cost?
Fees are offered on a sliding scale. Trades are welcome. No one will be turned away because they cannot pay the full rate. See
Pricing for more.
